UKRAINE’S ENERGY FUTURE: A PATH TO SUSTAINABILITY OR FURTHER EPENDENCE?

First European-Ukrainian Energy Day was held during two days 31st of May – 1st of June in Kyiv. Organizers: “European-Ukrainian Energy Agency” and Conference House Company. The Conference was attended by 300 participants from more than 10 countries of the world.

The Conference was opened by Mr. Jean-Andre Barbosa, Managing Director of Saint-Gobain Construction Products Ukraine / Chairman of the Board, EUEA. According to him, energy issues should be solved by complex approach – from delivery to use. Reforms of this brunch should be prepared and introduced by joint efforts of all the interested parties – from government and international financial organizations up to business.

In the framework of Event took place the Press-Conference, where Mr. Sergiy Ermilov, Head of the National Agency of Ukraine on Ensuring Efficient Use of Energy Resources Management, announced the National Economic Program, aimed to reduce the energy usage up to 20% till 2020 and increase the percentage of renewable energy to 5% from total energy maintenance. Alexander Mazurchuk, deputy Minister of Housing, in his turn mentioned that the main problem is the mentality of the Ukrainians, the lack of understanding of necessity of economy of energy sources.

Vasiliy Arbuzov, Head of Corporate Communication Department in Industrial Union of Donbass, shared with his experience of implementation the energy saving technologies on manufacturing. He also said about existing projects of IUD in the frames of Kyoto protocol. Besides, Mr. Arbuzov described benefits of implementing of energy efficiency programs, such as: environment protection, climate change mitigation, energy saving, development of indigenous energy sources and financial incensement of the company. 

Mr. Wolfram Rehbock, Senior Partner, Arzinger law firm; Member of the Board, EUEA paid attention on the legal initiatives in the frames of energy saving and alternative energy. In addition, Mr. Rehbock took an active part in section “Wind energy in Ukraine – will the dream work?” and made the report devoted to the issues of land apportion and import of wind energy generators. 

During the final session of the Energy Day were presented different projects and programs from financial institutions, donors and non-government organizations. In Ukraine there are more than 20 acting international organizations working with different aspects of energy efficiency and renewable energy sources in Ukraine. “Taking into account active work in sectors, a clear coordination of efforts among main players become necessary not only to avoid repeat of efforts, but also to bring the united position of European society to Ukrainian government”, - said Elena Rybak, Director of EUEA.
